Ultimate Prepper Shopping List
JOE THE PREPPER'S
Shopping List
This is a shopping list I created for me, myself, and you; nothing more, nothing less. This list is not a book of information covering a wide range of topics, set of skills to be practiced, or bug out bag preparation. There are plenty of books/websites devoted to those subjects. My list is geared towards sheltering in place and attempting to become Amish. There are obvious crossovers with bug out bags, but this is for bugging in and becoming self-reliant. Items on these pages are what I think would be ideal to have on hand, my list, my opinion. I am sure some people will have a different opinion, especially with the PPE section, but you know what they say about opinions! Anyways, this list is just to get you started. YOU, need to tailor this list to YOUR specific needs and situations. You also need to learn some skills because this list of items is WORTHLESS if you don't know how to properly use them, i.e. canning equipment, boomsticks, or even Q-tips. I have not included anything related to archery or fishing. I know nothing about archery, and have my father to thank for a lack of interest in fishing. If these subjects are of interest to you, there is plenty of information out there.
Unless your wallet allows, I would recommend quantity first, quality second. Store what you eat, eat what you store. Don't just pile a bunch of stuff in the corner and forget about it, you'll just be wasting your time and money. This list allows you some forethought so you are not stuck eating Spam, sure it's better than starving, but it would be better to plan ahead and eat something tasty. There are a ton of items on these pages, start acquiring them in order of importance to you and your particular situation. The best pantry, medical cabinet, or hardware store is not the one with the most items, but the one with the right items. The last page has some useful websites and book recommendations. Your welcome, now let's get this party started!!!
I've tried to make this as short, sweet, and to the point as possible with minimal fluff, cause I hate site's that make you read through pages and pages of fluff before you get to the good stuff, but if you're still not convinced, here's some more points to convince you:
- I put this list together years ago because I was tired of trying to remember everything I needed/wanted for the zombie apocalypse. I'm using that term as all encompassing for calamity events, i.e. government collapse, weather disasters, war, etc. There are plenty of websites devoted to preparing for the zombie apocalypse, but their products are very expensive and a lot of the stuff they sell can be bought at Walmart, Lowe's/Home Depot, TSC, Rural King, Dollar Tree, Harbor Freight, etc, at a much cheaper price. Driving a semi gives me lots of free time, so I put that free time to good use and perused up and down every aisle of said store's, including lot's of other stores as well, looking at EVERYTHING and deciding if it would be beneficial for the zombie apocalypse. I started this list for me, but the deeper I got into it, the more I realized I should try and sell my list to others because the world of prepping can be VERY intimidating and overwhelming to newbies. With my list most of the guesswork has been taken out. You grab the list, highlight the items relevant to your specific scenario, and go shopping. It doesn't get any easier than that.
- This list is geared towards beginning preppers, but it can work for anyone
- Is "prepping" something only crazy right-wing wackadoodles do? No, nothing could be further from the truth. Being prepared - "prepping" - is just another form of insurance. You have car insurance in case something happens in your car, you have medical insurance in case something happens to your body. Prepping is just living life insurance, the only difference is if you do it right, you will get a 100% ROI, return on your investment. I don't eat spam, so I'm not stocking up on spam. I stock/store what I eat so if nothing ever happens my food won't go to waste. As long as you store what you eat, eat what you store and rotate your stock, you should never have any waste. Prepping is insurance for when sh*t happens, like an economic collapse or the proverbial zombies, but it could also be bad weather or a job loss.
- Most of our grandparents were preppers, they just didn't call it prepping, they called it being prudent and responsible. They didn't have the luxury of throwing everything away like we do these days.
- We are victims of our own success. Almost everything we have is fairly reliable these days. The biggest hoopty is still pretty reliable, and even if it breaks down, we just whip out the smartphone and call AAA. It is convenient, but has made us complacent and extremely unprepared. You can change that for yourself and your family.
- This list is 11-13 pages long, that's long. The reason for this is because instead of just listing medical, food, tools, etc, I listed everything I could think of in their respective categories. I did this so you wouldn't overlook the small things you take for granted on a daily basis. This also has the added benefit of checking off 30 items instead of just 2 or 3
- This list gives ideas on what to buy, but more importantly, where to buy these items, a VERY big plus. I tried grouping like items in the medical and tool categories together so you are not running back and forth across the store. There is a wealth of information on this list, but ultimately it is a big time saver for you.
- This list is not perfect or the end all/be all. It is merely a broad introduction to being prepared. Take what you want, leave what you don't need. I did not create this list to start arguments about what/who/where/why is better, I don't care. If you like the green ones better than the orange ones, buy the green ones. I mention this cause people like to get caught in the weeds about idiotic discussion's - especially with boomsticks. Buy and use what works best for you and your specific situations, it's that simple!
- Having items is important and necessary, but being mentally prepared is more importanter :-) You could buy everything on this list but if you freeze up in the moment, or are unable to cope with the stressors at hand, there is no amount of survival gear that will save you.
- This list is also unbiased. The boomsticks function just as well for liberals as they do for conservatives. The food tastes the same whether you are rich or poor, black or white, tall or short, fat or skinny, blah, blah, blah.
- Several items are listed in more than one category because they are important or have multiple uses
- The quantity is up to you, because everyone's situation is going to be different, and the amount to be stored will depend on what you are preparing for - hurricane, zombie apocalypse, government collapse, etc.
- B*llets are great, but you might not be the only one sh**ting. Conversely, band-aids are great, but if you have no b*llets, you will need ALOT of band-aids. Moral - you want a well rounded set-up.
- The reason I put s'mores/crayons and the like on here is two fold. I enjoy both of them, but more importantly, this could be the difference between making or breaking for some people, especially kids. Having some comfort items like these will go a long way to ease fear and anxiety in people of all ages in very stressful situations.
- There is a massive amount of items on this list, don't let it overwhelm you. Buy what you can afford in order of importance to your specific concerns. Lot's of people are on fixed/limited incomes, don't let that dissuade you either. Rome wasn't built in a day, this rings true here. When you go shopping just buy an extra can of beans or an extra case of water, etc. Trust me, it will add up quickly.
- Here's a very small sample of the list:
